Gifted child behavior: does your child stand out from the rest of his peers? Perhaps he is gifted.
Exceptionally bright children, or gifted children, need special attention in areas such as education. A gifted child often will be so bored with a normal classroom that it will cause him to drop out of school when he is older. Some parents overlook their gifted chidren’s special needs simply because they do not know their child is gifted. A gifted child may come across as one who is lazy or disruptive as they are so bored with the classroom that they act out in other ways. There are several ways to tell if your child is gifted.
Gifted children are inherently curious and probably have been from the time they could interact with you and their environments. Is your child always interested in how things work? Perhaps your child is one of those who asks endless questions, this could be a sign of a gifted child. Gifted children often have wildly silly ideas and like to invent things, their views of the world are different and they are not stopped by conventional rules.
Who does your child socialize with? If your child prefers to socialize with adults, it is most likely because he finds adults more intellectually stimulating than his peers. This shows that he is advanced and needs more challenging associations. This is one of the reasons it is important to have your gifted child enrolled in a program with other gifted children. Your gifted child will most likely not make many friends
in a school with other children unlike himself, he will stand out and feel like he does not belong. Some gifted children will try to ‘dumb’ themselves down or cause trouble to fit in with other children.
If you think your child is gifted, it is important to investigate what opportunities are available to him so he can realize his full potential. Letting your child rest stagnantly in a class of students below his ability will squelch his thirst for knowledge.
